Care & Cleaning

SwiftDeck Decking Tiles are designed to make installation as quick, easy and trouble free as possible.

No special tools, adhesives or extra fixing devices are required - just a pair of sturdy gardening gloves, tape measure, sharp knife and screwdriver (plus a handsaw or jigsaw if you need to cut the tiles to fit around pipes etc).

Clean Hard Surface
Step 01 - Prepare the Surface
If you are laying the tiles over an existing concrete patio, then almost no preparation is needed. As long as the concrete doesn't have any large cracks with a surface mismatch either side of the cracks, just give the area a good sweep with a broom. If the surface is particularly uneven, you may want to level the surface with some patching compound or filler.  On hard dirt surfaces, sand or gravel we recommend first laying a weed control barrier.

After you've measured the area and calculated how many tiles you'll need (each Colorado or Sierra style tile covers 1 sq. ft. or 2 sq. ft. for the Double-C tile), you can sketch your design on paper or use our interactive "Deck Design Tool" to see what different  combinations of the tiles would look like before you lay the tiles.

Step 03 - Fit the Tiles Together
Start laying the SwiftDeck Decking Tiles from one corner of the area to be covered - normally you work from the outer edge of the area and work in towards any wall. Place the first tile in position and then lock the next tile into place by pushing down the edge of this tile against the edge of the first tile to engage the special connecting tabs on the sides of each tile.

Continue adding tiles this way until the complete area is covered and all the tiles are securely locked in place to each adjacent tile.

Step 04 - Finishing Touches
To fit around pipes, posts or corners, you can easily cut the required shape from the tile using a jigsaw or handsaw. Take care to remove any screws which might come in contact with your saw. Making a template of light cardboard the same size as the tile makes the task even easier and avoids any errors in cutting the tile to shape. Any screws in cut out sections should be replaced at appropriate points in the remaining part of the tile to ensure that all slats are securely fastened to the base.

If you want to hide the plastic connecting tabs on the outermost row of tiles, reducers are available which click onto the outer row of tiles. Mitered reducer pieces are available (in pairs) for any corners.

For maximum weather protection, enhanced resistance to mildew or mold formation and to help reduce fading due to the UV in sunlight, we always recommend applying a good quality decking oil/sealer to the tiles immediately after installation. This should be followed by further applications every 12 months or so, depending on the prevailing weather conditions, and the degree of exposure to the sun and rain.

We strongly recommend using one of the more specialized products which have UV inhibitors and/or transparent iron oxides  included and a high solids content rather than simple oil and turpentine-based products.

Products such as the following could be considered:

PPG Olympic Maximum
Flood CWF-UV Penetrating Oil Finish
Penofin Penetrating Oil Finish
Behr Weatherproofing Wood Sealer
Thompson's Water Seal
Messmers's UV Plus for Hardwood Decks
Defy -Deck Stain for Hardwoods
